It’s been three years since SZA, TDE’s first lady and soulful chanteuse, has released music. While her mystifying vocals floated in the depths of Rihanna’s “Consideration,” which she also co-wrote, and she found herself earning a songwriting credit for her contribution to Nicki Minaj and Beyonce’s “Feelin’ Myself,” fans were thirsty for her own body of work.
Well, after setbacks and delays the time has finally come. On Thursday (June 8) night, SZA’s long-awaited debut album, Ctrl, was released. The 14-track LP, which features singles “Drew Barrymore,” “Love Galore,” and “Broken Clocks,” gives loyal fans and new listeners an intimate look into her life. From her motivations to seeking validation and love to bottling fear, and mostly notably, desiring control, it’s literally the 26 year old’s diary on wax.
Aside from the Travis Scott-assisted “Love Galore,” SZA called on her label mates Kendrick Lamar (“Doves In The Wind”) and Isaiah Rashad (“Pretty Little Birds”) to make appearances. There’s also an interlude with a pleasant surprise from famed singer-songwriter James Fauntleroy.
